Digital platforms alerted possible child pornography crime in Quito

Authorities in Quito have arrested a 19-year-old man on charges of child pornography after receiving alerts from digital platforms.

In Quito, authorities arrested Cristian Josué M., a 19-year-old man, who is accused of storing child sexual abuse material on various digital platforms. He is currently under preventive detention and faces charges related to the alleged crime of child pornography involving minors. The investigation into this case is being carried out by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized, Transnational, and International Crime (Fedoti 7), which initiated the process following his arrest during an operation in the La Argelia sector of southern Quito.

This investigation began in July 2025, prompted by multiple CyberTip reports filed through the CyberTipline, which is a reporting platform for online sexual exploitation managed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The information for these reports was reportedly received from major companies, including Google and WhatsApp, indicating that the case is part of broader efforts to combat online child exploitation. These advanced tools and collaborations reflect growing awareness and action against digital crimes involving minors.

The Fiscalía has opened a 90-day fiscal instruction to further develop the investigation, emphasizing the importance of vigilant monitoring and swift action in cases of child exploitation. This incident highlights the critical role that digital platforms play in reporting and addressing potential abuses, as well as the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in tackling crimes that exploit children through technology. The case not only represents a legal battle for the accused but also raises significant concerns about the safety of children in digital spaces.
