Kyiv: Russia agreed to the US plan regarding security guarantees for Ukraine
Ukrainian officials announced that Russia expressed willingness to agree to US-proposed security guarantees for Ukraine during recent Geneva talks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov, reported that Russia has shown readiness to accept the United States' proposal on post-war security guarantees for Ukraine during the latest talks in Geneva. Budanov noted in an interview broadcasted on Ukrainian television that the Russian delegation indicated their approval of the guarantees that the US is offering to Ukraine, highlighting a potential shift in negotiations over Ukraine’s security framework.
Moreover, US President Donald Trump has urged both Moscow and Kyiv to reach an agreement to end what is considered the largest war in Europe since 1945. However, President Zelensky has expressed concerns over increasing pressure on Ukraine to make concessions in these discussions, which indicates a complex geopolitical situation where the demands of international actors could significantly influence Ukraine's sovereignty and security stance.
Ukraine is seeking firm security guarantees that would commit the United States and European allies to intervene should Russia attempt to attack again after the signing of a peace deal. The most recent round of peace talks in Geneva, which occurred last week, did not yield any breakthroughs, leaving both sides—Kyiv and Moscow—describing the meeting as challenging, thus highlighting the difficulties in reaching a conclusive resolution to the ongoing conflict.
