Invasion 'difficult to resolve without the US' - Allies must unite, says Ukrainian official

A senior Ukrainian official emphasized the necessity of U.S. involvement in peace negotiations with Russia amid ongoing conflict, stating it is challenging to resolve without their support.

As the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia enters its fifth year with no signs of ending, the future of peace negotiations between the two countries has become increasingly critical. Deputy Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, Serhiy Kyslytsya, who has participated in all negotiations since May last year, spoke to Asahi Shimbun regarding the state of talks with Russia and the outlook ahead. He highlighted that the absence of U.S. representatives at discussions has previously hindered progress, underscoring the significance of U.S. involvement in the peace process.

Kyslytsya recounted a particular instance from May 16, 2022, when Ukrainian and Russian delegations met for the first time in over three years in Istanbul, Turkey. The negotiations, however, were short-lived as the absence of the United States, which had consistently advocated for Ukraine's presence, led to a premature halt in discussions. This historical context emphasizes the need for united action among allies to effectively address diplomatic efforts, particularly when dealing with Russia's strategic negotiation tactics which Kyslytsya described as 'very cunning'.

The ongoing conflict not only affects Ukraine but also has wider implications for international security and stability in the region. Kyslytsya's remarks serve as a reminder to allied nations that maintaining a collaborative approach, especially with the backing of the United States, is crucial in overcoming the challenges posed by Russia. Without this coalition, the pathway to a sustainable peace remains uncertain, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.
