The neighbor woke up to worrying sounds in the hallway in Helsinki - obtained evidence against the rapist

A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison for a rape that occurred in a Helsinki apartment building hallway.

A Helsinki court has convicted a 33-year-old man to one year and 10 months in prison for a rape that took place in an apartment building hallway. The incident, which occurred on April 19, 2023, in the Töölö district, involved a man and a woman who had previously met in Kallio while drinking alcohol. After spending some time together, the woman became incapacitated due to alcohol and drug use, leaving her vulnerable to the man's actions.

The man and the woman accessed a residential building when a resident opened the main door. Neither party lived in the building, but they took the elevator to a higher floor where the woman fell asleep. According to the court's ruling, the man took advantage of her unconscious state and engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse with her. The woman awoke during the assault, tried to resist, and pushed the man away, indicating that she was not consenting.

As a result of this crime, the court has also ordered the man to pay the victim €2,500 for mental suffering, alongside more than €3,000 to cover the victim's legal costs. This case underscores ongoing concerns about sexual violence and the critical need for legal protections for vulnerable individuals, especially in situations involving substance use.
