Tempi: Black anniversary with gatherings around the world – Incidents, separate reports

Thousands gathered in Greece and around the world to commemorate the victims of the Tempi railway tragedy ahead of the upcoming trial.

Three days before the trial for the railway tragedy in Tempi, which shocked Greece on February 28, 2023, thousands of citizens, organizations, and unions took to the streets in Athens, Thessaloniki, and other major cities both within and outside Greece. The day was marked as a memory day and a demand for justice. The central slogan of the mass demonstration was 'Their profits or our lives. It was not an accident; it was murder. We do not forget, we do not forgive.' This gathering in Syntagma Square remembered the 57 lives lost in the tragedy, demanding real justice as the trial approached.

The Citizens’ Association of Victims of Tempi led the rally, supported by thousands of citizens, labor centers, the public-sector union ADEDY, various unions, student associations, and other groups, coming together from noon in Syntagma Square. The demonstration began with a minute of silence in memory of the 57 victims, during which the crowd chanted 'Immortal', followed by speeches emphasizing accountability and justice. The significance of the gathering lies not only in remembering the victims but also in holding authorities accountable for their actions that led to this tragedy.

The upcoming trial has reignited public anger and demands for justice, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding railway safety and infrastructure in Greece. Activists have been vocal in their stance that the crash, which was attributed to negligence, was preventable and should be treated as a criminal act rather than an accident. This event is set against a backdrop of increased scrutiny on public safety and government responsibility, making it a pivotal moment for Greek society as it seeks closure and accountability.
