Youth from Rio travels to Ceará with promise of becoming a football player and reports being scammed

An 18-year-old aspiring football player from Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Moraes, traveled to Ceará with the promise of joining a football team but ended up being scammed.

Matheus Moraes, an 18-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, dreamed of becoming a professional football player and traveled to Ceará believing he was given a golden opportunity. His optimistic journey quickly turned into a distressing experience as he and his family discovered they had fallen victim to a scam. The family maintained contact for two months with a man named Reidner Sousa de Holanda, who claimed to be a scout for football teams in Ceará. They sent videos and photos of Matheus playing football to this individual, who promised to forward them to several clubs.

To facilitate Matheus's move, the family was instructed by the scammer to pay R$ 1,000 as a 'cost assistance,' which they complied with, hoping for a chance to showcase Matheus's talents. However, upon arriving in Ceará earlier than scheduled, Matheus found that there was no engagement with the promised football club, Itapipoca, leading to his realization of the fraudulent promise. The case is now under police investigation as the family seeks to reclaim their lost money and prevent others from falling into similar traps.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of young athletes hoping to make it big in sports and highlights the existence of scams that prey on their dreams. It raises awareness about the precautions necessary when seeking professional opportunities, especially for young individuals from less privileged backgrounds who may not have the means to vet such opportunities thoroughly. Authorities are now looking into the matter to track the scammer and possibly recover the funds for Matheus's family.
