Headache After a Fall is Not Normal: When to Worry?

Experts warn that headaches following a fall can indicate a serious concussion requiring medical attention.

German neurologist Frank Erbgut has warned that head impacts during sports, traffic accidents, or even a collision with hard objects at home can lead to concussions, a form of mild traumatic brain injury that necessitates serious attention. Symptoms of concern following such injuries can include severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, memory disturbances, circulation issues, sudden sweating, irritability, and even loss of consciousness in some cases.

The World Health Organization defines mild traumatic brain injuries as temporary disturbances in brain functions resulting from a blow or jolt to the head, which may or may not involve loss of consciousness. This can lead some individuals to underestimate the seriousness of their condition. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that symptoms can appear immediately after the injury or emerge hours later, including difficulties in concentration, slow responses, sleep disturbances, and mood swings, highlighting the importance of seeking medical advice after such incidents.

Given the potential for recurring injuries and the range of serious symptoms that can arise, it is crucial for individuals who experience a headache after a fall to be vigilant. Medical professionals stress the importance of understanding the signs and seeking timely medical care to prevent more severe consequences associated with traumatic brain injuries.
