Niger: creation of a platform to care for returning migrants
Niger has established a national platform aimed at the sustainable management of returning migrants, backed by financial support from the European Union and technical assistance from the International Organization for Migration.
On Saturday, February 26, Niger launched a national platform intended to provide sustainable care for returning migrants. This initiative was made possible through financial backing from the European Union and technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The platform aims to address the needs and distress of individuals who have been expelled from their host countries and repatriated to Niger, enabling the government to manage their reintegration more effectively.
Niger serves as a critical transit hub in sub-Saharan Africa, with significant migration flows recorded by the IOM. As of 2025, over 4 million migrants have been listed along multiple routes leading northward toward Europe. Many of these migrants do not achieve their ultimate destination, highlighting the necessity for Niger to have robust systems in place for the reception and assistance of those who turn back due to various challenges encountered along the way.
The establishment of this platform underscores Niger's commitment to managing migration more humanely and sustainably. By facilitating the reintegration process for returning migrants, the government hopes to alleviate the burden on individuals and communities affected by erratic migration patterns, ultimately fostering a more stable and supportive environment for those who have faced hardship while pursuing better opportunities abroad.
