Blue House: Possibility of Prolongation of the Iran Situation... Close Consultation with Relevant Ministries
The Blue House held an emergency National Security Council meeting to discuss the potential long-term implications of the Iran situation and ensure the safety of South Korean citizens abroad.
Following the realization of an attack by the United States and Israel on Iran, the Blue House convened an emergency National Security Council (NSC) meeting to assess the current situation in Iran and the broader Middle East. They acknowledged the possibility that the situation may prolong and expressed their intent to discuss necessary measures with relevant departments. This proactive approach reflects the South Korean government's concern for both regional stability and the safety of its citizens.
In the evening of the 28th, the NSC meeting focused on the safety of citizens in the region, and the Ministry of Defense along with the Joint Chiefs of Staff conducted assessments regarding the conditions of their overseas deployed forces. They reported that, so far, the safety of these troops remains intact. General Jin Young-seung, head of the Joint Chiefs, held a video conference with leaders of the deployed forces to receive direct updates and emphasized prioritizing the safety of troops and overseas South Koreans.
Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that there have been no confirmed casualties of South Korean nationals in Iran or Israel up to this point, and activated protection measures for overseas citizens. A situation assessment meeting was held, chaired by Deputy Minister Kim Jin-ah, involving embassies in Iran and Israel, highlighting the essential cooperation between various diplomatic missions to monitor and ensure safety. The increasing tensions in the Middle East necessitate a coordinated response from South Korean embassies in the region to mitigate the risks and protect citizens effectively.
