[Breaking News] 'Supreme Court Justice Expansion Law' Passed by National Assembly
The South Korean National Assembly passed a law to increase the number of Supreme Court justices from 14 to 26.
On the 28th, the National Assembly of South Korea approved an amendment to the Court Organization Act, which aims to raise the number of Supreme Court justices from the current 14 to 26 over the next three years, adding four justices each year. This decision was made with a majority vote of 173 in favor, 73 against, and one abstention out of 247 voting lawmakers. The amendment is intended to diversify the composition of the Supreme Court in consideration of the nation's population and litigation scale, as well as to alleviate the backlog of cases within the court system. However, concerns have been raised that this sudden concentration of resources in the Supreme Court could lead to a weakening of lower courts.
