The Kenyan government is taking significant steps to combat the rising cancer burden in the country by inspecting the ongoing construction of the Kisii Cancer Treatment Centre. This facility is expected to enhance access to specialized care in the South Nyanza region. The Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Ouma Oluga, emphasized the urgency of the situation as the number of cancer cases surges, with the healthcare system being strained under the demand. Currently, only six fully operational public cancer centers are available to serve thousands of daily patients, leading many to travel long distances for treatment.

As cancer cases increase, statistics reveal a staggering 29,000 deaths annually and nearly 110,000 patients undergoing treatment. The Principal Secretary highlighted that this new treatment center is part of a broader strategy to improve infrastructure and access to essential medical services. The presence of such facilities is crucial, especially for those who have been forced to seek care at distant referral hospitals like Kenyatta National Hospital, which often overcrowd under the pressure of new patients.

By prioritizing cancer care and expanding treatment facilities, the Kenyan government aims to alleviate the challenges faced by cancer patients and ultimately reduce mortality rates associated with the disease.
