Petrõkina's competitor skips the World Championships
Belgian figure skater Loena Hendrickx has announced she will skip the upcoming World Championships due to injuries and a demanding season.
Belgian figure skater Loena Hendrickx, a two-time medalist in women's singles at the World Championships, has decided to withdraw from the upcoming World Championships scheduled for March. She cited a demanding season that began early and ongoing struggles with minor injuries as the main reasons for her decision. Hendrickx took to social media to announce her absence, expressing that it was a tough choice but necessary for her health and well-being.
In her place, fellow teammate Jade Hovine will join the Belgian team at the World Championships. Additionally, the team will also be represented by Nina Pinzarrone, a double bronze medalist in European Championships. This shift in representation highlights the challenges faced by athletes in maintaining their fitness and performance levels amidst the rigorous competition schedule.
Hendrickx, 26, has also been contemplating retirement, revealing her thoughts during the Milano Cortina Games. She reflected on her career trajectory, noting the physical demands change as one ages. With a history of injuries, including a significant ankle injury that sidelined her for most of the previous season, Hendrickx intends to assess her body and future plans thoroughly after this season concludes. Her situation raises questions about athlete longevity and the impact of injuries in high-level competition.
