Caracaraí, in South RR, is the municipality that deforested the most in the Amazon in the last six months
Caracaraí in Roraima has the highest deforestation rate in the Amazon, with 60 km² cleared in six months.
Caracaraí, a municipality located in southern Roraima, Brazil, has been identified as the region that has experienced the most deforestation in the entire Amazon basin over the past six months, as detailed by the Institute of Man and Environment of the Amazon (Imazon). From August 2025 to January 2026, Caracaraí reported a substantial clearing of 60 km² of forest, which constitutes 38% of the total deforestation activity observed in Roraima during the same period.
Roraima's overall deforestation reached 157 km², representing a significant 36% increase from the previous year when 115 km² were cleared. This increase is particularly concerning as Roraima stands out as the only state within the Amazon Legal area to report a rise in deforestation, amidst a broader regional decline of 41% in deforestation rates. This stark contrast highlights local environmental policies and enforcement challenges in managing forest conservation successfully.
Additionally, the findings reveal that other municipalities within Roraima, such as Rorainópolis and Amajari, also ranked among the highest for deforestation in the region. These figures raise alarms regarding the effectiveness of environmental protections in the area and indicate a pressing need for targeted initiatives to curb illegal logging and promote sustainable land use practices in the region.
