Even soldiers do not see as much death as paramedics on the front line. Such courage, I have never experienced anywhere, says Swedish filmmaker
Sebastian Lidström discusses the extraordinary bravery and humanity of military paramedics on the Ukrainian front, highlighting their willingness to risk their lives to save others.
Sebastian Lidström, a Swedish filmmaker, has produced a film titled "Can You Hear Me? The Invisible Battle of Ukrainian Military Medics," which presents the dire conditions faced by medical personnel on the Ukrainian front. He emphasizes that the extreme difficulties have worsened significantly over the past two years due to various challenges, including infrastructure disruptions caused by conflict. Lidström's portrayal underscores not only the physical risks but also the emotional and psychological toll on those working to save lives in life-threatening situations.
Lidström expresses admiration for the remarkable humanity exhibited by military medics serving in Ukraine, stating that their courage is unparalleled worldwide. He notes that these brave individuals often put their own lives at risk in service of others, showcasing a profound sense of humility and selflessness. He conveys that while they recognize the value of their own lives, they equally cherish the lives of those they aim to help, which drives them to endure unimaginable hardship.
After Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Lidström chose to relocate to Kyiv, where he now works with the NGO Repower, focusing on the mental health of military rescuers. Through this organization, he facilitates programs in Sweden designed to provide temporary relief and recuperation for paramedics, highlighting the importance of mental health support in high-pressure environments and the ongoing challenges they face in their essential roles during the conflict.
