Anesthesia Specialist Dispels Myths and Groundless Fears: Patients Are Carefully Prepared and Constantly Monitored During Procedures

An anesthesia specialist explains that despite common misconceptions, modern anesthesia is safe and involves careful monitoring of patients throughout the process.

Anesthesia is often surrounded by myths and fears, yet a specialist from the Antėja Health Solutions Center, anesthesiologist-reanimatologist Gabija Valauskaitė, emphasizes that the procedure is safe, modern, and meticulously controlled. It consists of three main stages: induction, maintenance, and emergence. At the beginning of the operation, patients are quickly and safely induced with intravenous medications, ensuring they are in a deep sleep and pain-free during the procedure while their vital signs are constantly monitored.

Throughout the operation, anesthesia is maintained in a manner that guarantees the patient remains unconscious and free from discomfort. The monitoring of vital signs is continuous, a practice that has evolved significantly since the 19th century when life functions were simply assessed through pulse checks and visible respiratory movements. The current standard of care involves complex monitoring techniques to ensure patient safety and comfort.

At the end of the surgical procedure, the administration of anesthetic agents is halted, allowing the patient to gradually awaken. They are carefully observed to ensure that they can breathe independently and that their condition is stable before being moved to a post-operative recovery area. This thorough process reflects the advancements in anesthesiology and highlights the importance of dispelling misconceptions to ease patient fears regarding the procedure.
