Low Vibration, High Mileage! The World’s First Diesel Hybrid Pickup Has Arrived

Chery's new KP31 dual cab ute, set to launch in late 2026, is claimed to be the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid pickup, designed specifically for the Australian market.

Chinese automaker Chery has unveiled its new KP31 dual cab ute concept at a special media event in Australia, emphasizing its innovation in the pickup segment. The company has announced plans to launch the production model by the end of 2026, positioning the KP31 as the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid pickup truck. This vehicle aims to blend the power of a diesel engine with the efficiency of an electric system, catering especially to the needs of the Australian market.

The KP31 is equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, supported by an electric motor, which together are expected to provide a thermal efficiency of 47 percent. This hybrid system is designed to outperform typical diesel engines by about 10 percent in terms of mileage. Chery has noted that the new hybrid setup will also be approximately 10 percent lighter than similar systems currently available, enhancing its performance and efficiency.

This innovative approach marks a significant step forward in the utility vehicle market, as the diesel electric hybrid technology seeks to merge the strengths of both diesel-driven power and electric propulsion. By targeting the Australian market specifically, Chery aligns itself with local demands for sustainable yet powerful utility vehicles, signaling potential changes in consumer preferences and automotive technology in the region.
