Calendar: Major celebration today - Who celebrates on February 28

The Orthodox Church commemorates the Saturday of the Saints Theodore on February 28, 2026, marking an important spiritual day in the first week of Lent.

On Saturday, February 28, 2026, the Orthodox Church honors the Saturday of the Saints Theodore, which holds significant spiritual importance during the first week of Lent. This day, also known as Psychosavvato, is dedicated to the remembrance of the Miracle of the Kollyva performed by Saint Theodore the Tyron. It is the first Saturday of Great Lent and the celebration aims to reinforce the faith of the community.

The Miracle of the Kollyva occurred when Saint Theodore the Tyron appeared miraculously to the Archbishop of Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate. The emperor had ordered the sprinkling of food in the market with the blood of pagan sacrifices to deceive Christians into consuming it. Saint Theodore warned believers to avoid such contaminated food and to instead boil wheat and eat kollyva, thereby saving them from the deception.

As a result, every first Saturday of Great Lent is commemorated with the blessing of kollyva, symbolizing faith and divine protection. Saint Theodore is also recognized as the Patron Saint of Orestiada and Theoklitos in Arcadia, emphasizing the local significance of this day in certain areas of Greece, alongside additional commemorations of other saints like Saint Basil the Confessor according to the calendar.
