2 Skiers caught in avalanche, west of Calgary, 1 found ‘unresponsive’
Search and rescue teams were deployed after two skiers were trapped in an avalanche near Calgary, resulting in one skier being found unresponsive and transported to the hospital in critical condition.
An avalanche occurred in the Naskiska area, approximately 100 kilometers west of Calgary, prompting immediate emergency response from search and rescue crews. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a distress call at about 12:49 p.m., reporting that two skiers were trapped. Multiple agencies joined the search operations, highlighting the serious nature of the situation.
According to the RCMP, one of the skiers managed to free themselves and escaped the avalanche uninjured. However, the condition of the second skier, a youth, was gravely alarming as they were found unresponsive. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) confirmed that this individual was transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital in critical condition, raising severe concerns about their survival and recovery prospects.
The Nakiska Ski Area publicly expressed their sorrow in a statement about the incident. They extended their condolences to the family and friends of the affected skier, emphasizing their commitment to cooperate with ongoing investigations into the avalanche.
