Farmers urged to prioritise safety after four deaths in two months
WorkSafe Victoria has initiated a campaign urging farmers to focus on safety following the recent deaths of four workers in the agricultural sector.
WorkSafe Victoria has launched a campaign emphasizing the critical importance of safety for farmers after witnessing four work-related fatalities in just two months. This alarming statistic has alarmed many in the agriculture sector, prompting new regulations and protocols to ensure that such tragedies are mitigated. A significant part of this campaign focuses on raising awareness among older farmers, who are particularly vulnerable to workplace accidents. In fact, all the fatalities in the agricultural sector last year involved individuals aged 65 and older, highlighting the urgent need for safety training targeted at this demographic.
The tragic passing of Brad Collins, a well-respected dairy farmer, has brought the issue to the forefront. Collins, who was only 51, succumbed to injuries sustained in an ATV accident. His funeral drew hundreds of mourners in south-west Victoria, showcasing the close-knit nature of agricultural communities and the profound impact that such losses have on them. This incident has served as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers present in farming, especially with the increasing number of older workers within the industry.
Since 2021, the statistics have been disconcerting, with 38 work-related deaths reported in Victoria's agriculture sector. In 2025 alone, five fatalities have already been recorded. As WorkSafe Victoria continues to campaign for enhanced safety measures, it is clear that new strategies and training must be implemented to protect the lives of those in this vital but hazardous profession. The emphasis on safety can potentially save lives and prevent future tragedies, transforming the workplace environment for farmers across the state.
