Burned church in Montreal; at least 30 churches were burned a few years ago

A fire completely destroyed Saint-Paul Church in Montreal's Sud-Ouest district, recalling past arson incidents targeting churches linked to revelations about unmarked graves of Indigenous children in Canada.

In the early morning hours of February 23, 2026, a fire completely destroyed the Saint-Paul Church located in the Sud-Ouest district of Montreal. This incident is reminiscent of a troubling wave of attacks on church properties that occurred following shocking reports about alleged mass graves of Indigenous children in Canada. Between 2021 and 2023, at least thirty churches were set ablaze, and more than eighty others suffered damage or vandalism, with the unrest igniting after revelations about 215 suspected unmarked graves at a former Catholic residential school in Kamloops. A little over five years later, concrete forensic answers are still lacking concerning these graves.
