Two men were arrested by the Civil Police for the illegal sale of a squirrel monkey for R$ 12,000 in Santa Isabel, Brazil.

Two men were arrested in Santa Isabel, Brazil, for illegally selling a squirrel monkey. The operation, which took place on the Alberto Hinoto highway, was a result of an undercover sting initiated by a local environmental protector who spotted the advertisement in a WhatsApp group. After contacting the suspect and pretending to be a buyer, the environmentalist alerted the Civil Police and environmental agents, leading to the suspects’ apprehension at a nearby gas station.

According to João Buosi, the Secretary of the Environment for Santa Isabel, the sale of the domesticated squirrel monkey highlighted ongoing issues surrounding wildlife trafficking in the region. Both men were taken to the local police station and are expected to face both administrative and criminal charges for their actions. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance from community members and local authorities in combating illegal wildlife trade.

The rescued squirrel monkey has been transported to the Tietê Ecological Park in São Paulo, where it will receive care and rehabilitation at the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (Cetras). The authorities involved are working diligently to ensure the animal's welfare while addressing the larger issue of wildlife trafficking that threatens biodiversity in Brazil.
