A man was sentenced to over eight years in prison for attempting to murder his ex-partner while she was asleep, after an altercation over money.

Jaime Alves Santos Júnior was sentenced to 8 years and 4 months in prison for the attempted feminicide of Marineide Alves da Costa in São José de Ribamar, Brazil. The attack occurred on January 1, 2023, when Santos Junior, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, assaulted his ex-partner while she was asleep. He choked her and then stabbed her after failing to find any money in their home.

Marineide managed to escape by pretending to comply with Santos Junior's demands for money; however, she collapsed outside their home. The case highlights the issue of domestic violence in Brazil, particularly against women, and the severity of the legal consequences for such acts. During the trial, prosecutor José Márcio Maia Alves emphasized the gravity of the crime, characterizing it as motivated by the perpetrator's desire for financial gain, which underlines the desperate circumstances often faced by domestic violence victims.

This conviction represents a broader societal recognition of the need to combat violence against women and ensure that offenders are held accountable. It opens a dialogue about necessary support systems for victims and the importance of legal measures to deter such violent acts in the future, contributing to the ongoing fight against domestic violence in Brazil and the need for societal change regarding gender-based violence.
