One of the largest in Europe. Fear for the Islamic center project in Venice

Concerns are growing over the proposed construction of a significant Islamic center in Venice, advertised on social media as one of the largest in Italy and Europe, although no formal plan has been submitted to the local government yet.

There are plans underway for the construction of a major mosque in Venice, described as 'one of the largest Islamic centers in Italy and Europe'. The information was disclosed through a Facebook page called 'Mosque of Venice.' Despite the absence of an official project submitted to the city council, there is already promotional activity within the Islamic community surrounding the initiative. The project's proponents state that they are in the final stages of acquiring approximately 7,840 square meters of land intended for the mosque. Additionally, they have completed the initial design for the mosque, attributing their progress to divine guidance.

The site in question is an abandoned former sawmill, which has reportedly been optioned for development. So far, there has been a deposit of 150,000 euros, amounting to 10% of the total cost of 1.5 million euros for the property. There are similarities to past mosque projects in Italy, such as that of Turin, where a mosque will not include a minaret, but will feature facilities like a café-restaurant. This indicates a trend towards accommodating community needs while addressing local sensitivities about Islamic architecture in Italy.

The community's interest in establishing such a center reflects broader trends regarding the growth of the Islamic population in Italy and highlights ongoing discussions about cultural integration, religious expression, and community relations. As the plans develop, it may provoke both support and opposition from different segments of the local population, necessitating a robust dialogue about inclusivity and coexistence in Venice, a city known for its rich and diverse cultural heritage.
