Ghana says at least 55 of its people killed after Russia ‘lured’ them to fight Ukraine
Ghana's foreign minister revealed that at least 55 Ghanaians have died after being recruited by Russia to fight in Ukraine.
Ghana's foreign minister has reported that at least 55 Ghanaians have lost their lives in the ongoing war in Ukraine, after being allegedly lured by Russia with promises of jobs. This alarming revelation came during a visit to Kyiv, where concerns were raised about the recruitment of African nationals into combat roles in the conflict. The statistics shared by the minister indicated that approximately 272 Ghanaians were believed to have been drawn into combat since the war began in 2022, highlighting a grim outcome where some have been killed, and others, such as 2 Ghanaians, captured as prisoners of war.
The situation reflects a troubling trend where individuals from various African countries are being offered enticing job opportunities that ultimately lead them to the frontlines of the Ukraine conflict. Ghana's foreign minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, emphasized the detrimental impact this recruitment has on families and communities back home, stirring tensions between Ghana and Russia. The minister's comments coincide with a broader pattern reported by other African nations as well, where citizens have found themselves trapped in the war environment.
Ukrainian officials, including foreign minister Andrii Sybiha, have corroborated the Ghanaian minister's claims by indicating that over 1,780 Africans from 36 countries have been documented as active combatants among Russian forces. As Russia continues to deny any unlawful recruitment, the situation raises serious questions about the ethics and practices surrounding the war's recruitment strategies, particularly in relation to African citizens. This development could lead to significant diplomatic repercussions and exacerbates the existing tensions between Moscow and several African nations.
