LigaPro announces support for former goalkeeper 'Espartaco' Mendoza

LigaPro has reached out to former goalkeeper Víctor Mendoza to provide medical support as he faces severe health issues.

Miguel Ángel Loor, president of LigaPro, announced via his X account that the organization has contacted former Barcelona SC goalkeeper Víctor Mendoza, known as 'Espartaco', to assess his medical condition and coordinate assistance for the necessary medical supplies. This outreach comes as Mendoza is coping with multiple health challenges that severely limit his mobility and respiratory functions. Recently, a local newspaper visited Mendoza's home to check on his situation, reflecting the growing concern over his well-being.

Mendoza's health issues, which reportedly include cardiac, renal, and pulmonary complications, began in January of last year with serious symptoms such as fluid retention and difficulties stemming from hypertension. During his illness, Mendoza spent eight months hospitalized in Portoviejo, highlighting the severity of his condition and the urgent need for medical support. Loor emphasized the role of LigaPro's health director, Juan Arroba, who will maintain ongoing communication to assist Mendoza during his treatment.

In addition to the immediate support for Mendoza, Loor also advocated for a broader initiative that would establish a health plan and insurance for retired football players, stressing the importance of solidarity in the sports community during challenging times. This case exemplifies the often-overlooked health crises faced by retired athletes and signals a potential shift towards ensuring better post-career health management in professional sports.
