European funds can be used to ensure access to safe abortions
The European Commission allows EU member states to use social funds to support access to safe abortions for vulnerable women and girls.
In response to the campaign 'My Voice, My Choice', European Commission Vice President Roxana Minzatu stated that countries could voluntarily utilize existing EU social funds to support safe abortion access for women and girls in vulnerable situations. This initiative represents a significant shift towards empowering women, as it encourages member states to take responsibility for ensuring women can live confidently and freely with the backing of EU support.
Despite the liberalization of abortion rights in many of the 27 EU member states, the situation remains dire in some countries, particularly Malta and Poland, where abortion rights are still severely restricted. Women's rights activists argue that this limitation has resulted in more than 20 million women in the EU lacking access to safe abortion services. The Commission's acknowledgment of this issue highlights a critical gap in women's health care and rights across the continent.
Last year, a petition was created urging Brussels to assist women from EU countries where abortion is not readily available to secure the procedure in another member state. Upon reviewing their demands, Brussels indicated that no new legislation or funding was needed for these initiatives, suggesting that member states could directly operate within the existing framework to facilitate access to necessary health services for women, particularly those facing restrictive laws in their home countries.
