Woman feels 'sore throat', discovers chest infection and dies after surgery in Paraná
A 39-year-old woman from Apucarana, Paraná, died after a misdiagnosis of a sore throat led to a bacterial infection and complications requiring surgery.
Jessica Glaciele de Assis, a 39-year-old resident of Apucarana, Paraná, tragically passed away in Londrina just six days after she sought treatment for what she initially believed was a sore throat. According to her husband, André Baganha, the final diagnosis revealed that she was suffering from a retropharyngeal abscess, a bacterial infection located behind the pharynx, which subsequently led to mediastinitis, a serious infection in the chest cavity. Jessica and André had visited the Apucarana emergency unit multiple times without proper diagnosis, as her symptoms were attributed to throat issues.
The couple initially sought medical attention on February 18, 19, and 20, where they received medication for her sore throat but did not notice any swelling or other recognizable symptoms. André recounted the frustration of the situation, noting that despite repeated visits to the emergency unit, their concerns were dismissed, leading to a deterioration of Jessica’s health. On February 19, her condition seemed unchanged as she struggled to swallow, prompting further medical visits without a clear resolution.
The unfortunate outcome of Jessica's condition raises significant questions about the initial assessments and treatments received at the healthcare facility. The family is left grappling with the loss and seeking answers regarding the medical care that may have contributed to this tragic event. This case highlights the critical importance of accurate diagnosis and thorough examination in healthcare settings, particularly when symptoms could lead to serious complications as seen in Jessica's case.
