The court agreed to terminate the treatment of a senior convicted of terrorism

A Czech court has approved the termination of psychiatric treatment for Jaromír Balda, who was sentenced to four years in prison in 2019 for a terrorist attack on a railway.

On Friday, the Mladá Boleslav District Court in Czechia granted a proposal to end psychiatric treatment for Jaromír Balda, an 78-year-old who was convicted in 2019 for a terrorist attack on a railway and for threatening terrorist acts. Judge Tomáš Křivský stated that the treatment had achieved its purpose and deemed Balda no longer a danger to society, expressing confidence that he would not repeat the actions for which he was prosecuted. The court noted that Balda does not suffer from any mental illness and that his treatment has been sufficiently lengthy. Balda had been conditionally released from prison in 2020 with a five-year probation period, during which he was mandated to continue outpatient psychiatric treatment. Both his defense attorney and the prosecutor confirmed that the treatment had fulfilled its purpose, with a very low likelihood of recidivism, a statement that was corroborated by Balda’s physician during the court proceedings. The decision to terminate the treatment is final, with all parties waiving the right to appeal. After the ruling, Balda expressed immense relief, likening his experience to having a shoelace untied, stating that he can finally breathe freely. He wished for others not to encounter such difficult situations, highlighting the personal impact of the court’s decision on his life and mental well-being.
