Slip Hit Out of Nowhere, 20 People to Emergency - 'Then We Go Fast'

Around twenty people were treated at emergency services due to slips on icy surfaces in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

On a Friday morning, approximately twenty individuals were treated at emergency departments in the Helsinki area for injuries resulting from slips on icy surfaces. The regional chief physician of HUS, Kimmo Suojanen, noted that the number of injuries quantified this year is exceptional for this winter season. Most of the injured are working-age adults, with common injuries including ankle sprains, fractures, and injuries to wrists, shoulders, or ribs.

The rapid onset of the icy conditions caused many slips among working-class individuals throughout the Helsinki metropolitan region. By noon, around 20 patients had rushed to local emergency services seeking treatment for their injuries. According to Suojanen, statistics suggest that the Friday in question is among the most slippery days of the year, marking a significant spike in accidents compared to previous instances over the winter.

Suojanen emphasized that this winter has had relatively few icy conditions prior to this incident, making the sudden shift all the more dangerous. He expressed concern over individuals caught off-guard by the unexpected ice, stating, "If the slipperiness comes at you out of nowhere, then you go fast." Many of the unfortunate victims have suffered serious ankle injuries, including sprains and fractures, reflecting a growing need for awareness regarding changing weather conditions and their impacts on public safety.
