Walk for Life: The EC uses false figures to bypass the powers of states regarding abortion
The Europska komisija (European Commission) has rejected a proposal for funding cross-border abortions, which would have undermined national laws protecting the right to life.
The organization 'Walk for Life, Families and Croatia' expresses satisfaction with the European Commission's decision to reject a request from the radical left-liberal civil initiative 'My voice, my choice' to establish a new fund for financing cross-border abortions. The initiative aimed for the European Commission to fund travel costs and abortion procedures for women from countries with restrictive abortion laws to those with more liberal regulations, which the organization sees as an infringement on national laws that protect the right to life.
Proponents of the initiative proposed that it should allow women from countries like Croatia, Italy, or Austria, where abortion laws permit termination up to the 10th or 12th week of pregnancy, to travel to countries like the Netherlands, where abortion can be legally performed up to six months into the pregnancy. This proposal would essentially nullify the effectiveness of national legislations designed to protect life, which the organization vehemently opposes, stating that such actions undermine the rights laid out in their respective countries.
The rejection of the proposal by the European Commission has resulted in mixed reactions, with 'pro-abortion' advocates considering it a loss while the 'Walk for Life' advocates claim victory in protecting national legislative frameworks. The discussion around reproductive rights and abortion continues to be a polarized issue across Europe, affecting national policies and the relationship between EU regulations and individual member state sovereignty.
