Kováčik remains president of SFZ despite mobile phone scandal. He accused a federation member of enriching himself by 200,000 euros.

Ján Kováčik was re-elected as president of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ) despite facing controversy over the purchase of mobile phones.

Ján Kováčik was re-elected as the president of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ) during a voting conference, securing 57 out of 87 possible votes. His re-election comes amidst allegations related to the purchase of tens of thousands of mobile phones, an issue that had raised questions about his authority over the federation's assets. Despite the controversy, Kováčik's support was strong enough to secure a fifth consecutive term, extending his presidency until February 2030.

During the conference, Kováčik faced confrontation from the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Rudolf Huliak, who raised issues regarding the mobile phone purchases and the guarantees related to SFZ's assets. In his defense, Kováčik claimed that he had never ordered, received, or signed any contract regarding these mobile phones. He challenged anyone who disagreed with his statement to present a contract with the SFZ as evidence. The scandal also involved accusations that a member of the federation had managed to enrich himself by 200,000 euros, adding further scrutiny to Kováčik’s leadership.

Kováčik's victory indicates a continued confidence from the federation's delegates. Competing against former general secretary Peter Palenčík, who received 29 votes, and newcomer Martin Filipkov, who did not receive any votes, Kováčik has solidified his role within Slovak football governance. This situation reflects the complexities within the SFZ as Kováčik, still in power after a decade-plus of leadership, must navigate both allegations and his authority in leading the organization into the future.
