Court grants Malami, son N200m bail in terrorism financing case
A Nigerian court has granted bail to former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami and his son in a terrorism financing case.
In a high-profile case, the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz, in the sum of N200 million each over charges related to terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms. The decision was made by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik during a ruling on their separate bail applications. The judge emphasized that the primary purpose of granting bail was to ensure that defendants appear for trial.
The bail comes with specific conditions, including the necessity for each defendant to have two sureties, one of whom must possess developed landed property in exclusive areas of Maitama or Asokoro in Abuja. This requirement involves the submission of title deeds to the court's Deputy Chief Registrar along with sworn affidavits detailing the sureties' means and recent passport photographs. Additionally, the court has mandated that the defendants surrender their passports and recent passport photographs to ensure compliance with the bail conditions.
While they have been granted bail, the defendants have been ordered to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until the conditions of their bail are fully satisfied. This case has drawn significant attention due to the stature of the individuals involved and the serious nature of the allegations against them, highlighting the ongoing issues of terrorism financing and legal accountability in Nigeria.
