Sanna Marin's Harasser Unusually Found Not Criminally Responsible Without Mental Assessment
Sanna Marin's harasser was declared not criminally responsible for his actions without a mental health assessment.
A Finnish court has declared that a man who stalked former Prime Minister Sanna Marin is not criminally responsible for his actions. This unusual decision by the Helsinki District Court means that the stalker will not face any criminal penalty for his offenses against Marin, which occurred between November and December 2024. Despite no mental health assessment being conducted, the court labeled the man as incapable of understanding his actions at the time of the crime.
In a separate case, the same perpetrator was deemed not criminally responsible for a series of offenses against another woman, including stalking and sexual harassment. The initial offenses occurred before the incidents related to Marin and were linked to an encounter during a work-related health check at a private medical facility. For the crimes committed under diminished capacity, the man was sentenced to four months of conditional imprisonment.
As part of the ruling, he was ordered to pay a total of €2,000 in damages for suffering to his victim and around €3,200 for legal costs. The court’s decision to label him as not responsible for his actions highlights ongoing legal and societal challenges in dealing with cases involving mental health and accountability, especially in high-profile instances involving public figures like Marin.
