Ligi proposed Matis Mäeker as head of the Money Laundering Bureau

Estonian Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi proposed to the government to confirm Matis Mäeker for a second term as head of the Money Laundering Bureau.

Estonian Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi has recommended Matis Mäeker for a second term as the head of the Money Laundering Bureau (RAB). Ligi announced the proposal on social media this week, indicating his support for Mäeker's reappointment. The government's approval is required for this proposal to be finalized, as it is a decision that the cabinet must endorse.

Matis Mäeker has been leading the RAB since June 14, 2021, and his continued leadership aims to strengthen the implementation of measures against money laundering and terrorism financing in Estonia. The competition for the position included five candidates, highlighting the significance of the role in maintaining the integrity of Estonia's financial system.

The Money Laundering Bureau operates as an independent government agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance. It is tasked with collecting and analyzing information related to suspicions of money laundering and financing of terrorism, ensuring compliance with anti-money laundering regulations, and collaborating with other investigative and supervisory authorities to maintain a secure economic environment in Estonia.
