[NBS] Korea’s Lee logs 67% approval rating, his highest since taking office

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung achieves a 67% job approval rating, the highest since his election, reflecting increased support for his party.

This week, a National Barometer Survey revealed that South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has garnered a 67% approval rating, marking his highest since assuming office. This approval rate increased by 4 percentage points from a previous survey, while disapproval ratings decreased to 25%. This significant shift has widened the gap between approval and disapproval ratings to a notable 42 percentage points, suggesting growing confidence in Lee's leadership among the public.

The survey also highlighted trends among political parties, showing that Lee's Democratic Party has a support rate of 45%, an increase of 4 points compared to earlier figures. Conversely, the main opposition, the People Power Party (PPP), experienced a decline, dropping 5 points to a current support of 17%, which is the lowest recorded since Jang Dong-hyuk became the party leader in August of the previous year. This reflects a potentially shifting political landscape in South Korea, with Lee's party gaining traction, especially in regions like Seoul, Busan, and Incheon.

Despite the overall increase in support for the Democratic Party, the PPP managed to tie with the Democrats in their strongholds of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province at a support rate of 28%. This indicates that while the Democratic Party is making gains nationally, they still face strong resistance in certain conservative areas. The results of the survey may have significant implications as South Korea approaches future elections, with Lee's administration potentially leveraging this support to push forward its agenda while the PPP must reassess its strategies to regain voter trust.
