IMPORTANT CHANGE: Waiting list for special care will no longer lead to backlogs when documents expire

The Estonian Social Insurance Board is initiating contact with individuals on the waiting list for special care services to ensure their rights remain uninterrupted as their documents expire.

The Estonian Social Insurance Board has announced a significant change regarding individuals waiting for special care services. Starting now, the board will proactively contact these individuals to ensure that their rights to receive services remain intact when their decision documents expire. This initiative aims to support people by maintaining their place in the service queue, making the entire process more convenient and flexible for them.

In recent years, the demand for special care services in Estonia has grown, leading to long waiting lists due to insufficient service availability. As of February this year, there are 2,296 individuals on the waiting list for special care services, of which 594 have expired decisions regarding their service eligibility. This backlog highlights the pressing need for reforms in service provision and management to accommodate the rising number of people in need.

The Social Insurance Board emphasizes that having a valid decision is crucial for individuals to access special care services. By reaching out to those whose decisions have expired or are about to expire, the Board seeks to ensure that their right to service and queue position is preserved. This approach reflects a commitment to improving the experience of individuals relying on special care services in Estonia, promoting a more responsive and supportive system for those in need.
