The venue of two of Šaro's Fenerbahce EuroLeague games has been changed
The EuroLeague has officially announced changes in the venue for two upcoming Fenerbahce games, moving them due to safety concerns amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
On Friday, the EuroLeague announced that the venues for the 33rd and 36th rounds of Fenerbahce's EuroLeague games have changed. The Turkish team will now travel to Belgrade for their match against Maccabi Tel Aviv, scheduled for March 24-25. In the 36th round, happening on April 7-8, Fenerbahce's player will head to Sofia, Bulgaria, where they will compete against Hapoel Tel Aviv at Arena 8888. These changes were made primarily for the safety of the teams due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, despite a temporary ceasefire in place.
Relations between Israel and Turkey remain tense, with both governments issuing recommendations to their citizens advising against travel to each other's countries. This situation highlights the complexity of organizing international sporting events, especially those involving teams from politically sensitive regions. Fenerbahce has previously played matches against Israeli teams in various countries, including Lithuania, and has adapted by hosting some games in places like Munich this season as a response to the geopolitical climate. The shifting venues reflect a careful balance between ensuring player safety and maintaining the competitive integrity of the league.
