Demands that the government ensures that the submarine base gets power: - Must have a different place in the priority queue

A politician demands the Norwegian government prioritize energy supply for a submarine base amid current energy restrictions.

Ramsund Naval Station serves as the main base for the Norwegian Navy in Northern Norway and will host one of Norway's six new submarines. Statnett, the Norwegian system operator for electricity, has rejected a request for increased power consumption at the base due to insufficient capacity in the grid. Current regulations do not allow for prioritization of defense interests, highlighting a disconnect between military needs and energy policy, according to Statnett officials.

In response to the situation, Ole Herman Sveian of the Center Party has submitted a written inquiry to Energy Minister Terje Aasland, urging a reevaluation of energy supply priorities. Sveian argues that national security and preparedness must take precedence over economic calculations when it comes to resource allocation. He emphasizes the need for a shift in mindset within the government, suggesting that the growing security threats, particularly following Russia's invasion of Ukraine four years ago, necessitate more assertive action towards military readiness.

Sveian expresses concern that without immediate and focused policies, it will take time to implement the necessary measures to ensure that Norway's military capabilities are not hindered by infrastructural limitations. He calls for a more robust approach that prioritizes the needs of the defense sector, reinforcing the idea that ensuring national security should be a fundamental consideration in energy policy planning. The ongoing energy crisis affecting the submarine base highlights broader implications for Norway's defense strategy and its capability to respond to contemporary threats.
