Ukmergės teenagers killed a disabled victim: a former basketball player is also sent to prison
Two teenagers have been sentenced for the murder of a disable man in Lithuania, with one receiving over five years in prison.
The Lithuanian Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday regarding the appeal of 18-year-old B. Vilutis against a previous sentence handed down by the Vilnius District Court. Vilutis' appeal was unsuccessful, and his sentence of 5 years and 6 months in prison for his role in the murder of a disabled man remains intact. His accomplice, a 16-year-old who was also involved in the attack, will spend 5 years and 8 months behind bars. The fatal assault took place on November 2, 2024, in the town of Dainava, Ukmergė District.
The crime involved the violent assault of a 64-year-old man, who had physical disabilities, by the two teenagers allegedly under the influence of alcohol. They broke into the victim's property and assaulted him, striking him in the head multiple times. Reports indicate that the attackers used both their fists and a cup to inflict harm on the victim, who was later hospitalized due to severe head injuries.
The victim succumbed to his injuries after more than two weeks on November 19, leading to the teenagers facing serious legal consequences. The incident highlights issues surrounding youth violence and the handling of crimes against vulnerable populations, as the effect of such actions on society raises significant concerns about safety and justice for those with disabilities in Lithuania.
