Golden Dawn Trial: The Court's Decision Will Be Announced on March 4th
The decision regarding the Golden Dawn criminal organization trial will be announced on March 4th, after the court postponed the announcement due to lack of readiness.
The verdict in the trial concerning the Golden Dawn party, labeled a criminal organization in Greece, will be announced on March 4th by the president of the Five-Member Criminal Court of Appeals. Initially, the court had set for today the announcement regarding the guilt of the defendants; however, it notified the trial stakeholders that it was not prepared to make a ruling. Consequently, the judges convened to establish a new court date. The president of the court stated that the deliberation by the judges remains incomplete, thus delaying the decision until the morning of Wednesday, March 4th.
Prosecutor Kyriaki Stefanatou has urged the judges to declare all 42 defendants guilty, as was determined in the initial trial. The charges against the defendants relate to their involvement in the establishment, organization, and leadership of a criminal group. Significant in the case are allegations linked to the murder of activist Pavlos Fyssas in 2013 and an attempted murder against an Egyptian fisherman during a brutal assault by Golden Dawn's "attack squad".
The implications of this trial are heavy, not only for the parties involved but also for the Greek society grappling with the aftermath of the far-right's violence and ideology. The case has reignited debates about extremism, accountability, and the political atmosphere in Greece, challenging both lawmakers and citizens to confront the realities of political violence and the legacy of groups like Golden Dawn that once held significant influence in the country.
