Prisoners Were Forced to Vote for Candidates Chosen by Criminal Organization in ES; Five People are Charged by the Public Prosecutor's Office
In Espírito Santo, Brazil, five individuals have been charged with coercing prisoners to vote for specific candidates during the 2022 elections, allegedly under threat of retaliation.
The Electoral Justice of Espírito Santo has received a complaint from the Public Electoral Ministry (MPE) against five people accused of coercing prisoners during the first round of the 2022 elections in Serra, Grande Vitória. These coercive actions are believed to have benefited specific candidates amid an atmosphere of intimidation, with fears of retaliation impacting the prisoners' choices. Reports suggest that the criminal organization created conditions for fear among the detainees, threatening to revoke privileges such as sunlight exposure and visitation rights.
According to the investigations led by the Federal Police (PF), the orchestrated attempts at manipulation stem from actions taken by the deceased Sóstenes Araújo, who served as the director of the Penitentiary School at the Provisional Detention Center of Serra. He allegedly coordinated with Silayr Pedra Ribeiro, who served as an advisor to the local electoral process. This logistically orchestrated crime aimed to influence the electoral outcome through the exertion of undue pressure on imprisoned voters, circumventing the democratic process.
The MPE's complaint, officially submitted on the 13th of the month, follows the PF's final report which included testimonies from all implicated parties. This case highlights the deep-seated issues of corruption and criminal influence within electoral processes in Brazil, indicating significant challenges for democratic integrity and the rule of law within the region. The outcome of these charges may have broader implications for future elections and determination of how electoral laws will be enforced against such criminal activities.
