Former Terunofuji's Isegahama Oyakata Committed Violence Against His Disciple, Makunouchi - Hakunofuji

Former Yokozuna Terunofuji's Isegahama Oyakata has been accused of committing violence against his disciple, Hakunofuji, prompting an investigation by the Japan Sumo Association.

Former Yokozuna Terunofuji's Isegahama Oyakata, aged 34, has been reported to have committed acts of violence against his disciple, Hakunofuji, a 22-year-old makunouchi wrestler. This revelation came to light on the 27th, following inquiries made with connected parties. In response to the allegations, the Japan Sumo Association's Compliance Committee has initiated an investigation into the matter, highlighting the serious nature of violence within the sumo wrestling community.

Isegahama Oyakata inherited the stable from former Yokozuna Asahifuji in June of the previous year and currently has a record number of 31 disciples under his care as of the start of the spring tournament. Hakunofuji originally entered the Miyagino stable in 2023 under Yokozuna Hakuho, but due to violent incidents, he transferred to Isegahama stable in 2024 along with other wrestlers. Following the Oyakata's wishes, Hakunofuji also changed his shikona (ring name) this year, further entrenching the complex dynamics within the stables.

Isegahama stable has a troubling history with violence, as it was previously involved in incidents where the then Yokozuna Hirmafuji retired due to violent conduct in 2017, and another incident emerged in 2022 involving lower-ranked wrestlers that resulted in retirements as well. These patterns of violence in the sumo world underscore a pressing issue that the Japan Sumo Association must address to ensure a safe and respectable environment for its athletes.
