Army foils kidnap attempt, rescues three victims in Enugu

Nigerian troops successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt on the Enugu–Otukpo Road and rescued three victims.

Troops from Sector 1 under Operation Whirl Stroke have successfully intervened in a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu–Otukpo Road, rescuing three victims in the process. This operation was reported by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, highlighting the ongoing threats of kidnapping in the region. The event took place on February 25, 2026, when the troops received intelligence regarding the seizure of a bus carrying multiple passengers, including a minor.

According to the statement, the intelligence was gathered during a night patrol, prompting the troops stationed at the Forward Operation Base, Otukpo, to act quickly. The operatives managed to track the kidnappers along their withdrawal route, demonstrating a proactive approach to combating crime. The disruption caused by the military's swift response forced the abductors to abandon three of the victims, indicating a successful mission which prevented further harm.

This incident underscores the pervasive issue of kidnappings in Nigeria, where security forces are increasingly called to respond to such threats. Community awareness and military responsiveness are fundamental in tackling these security challenges, especially on critical transport routes like the Enugu–Otukpo Road. The rescue operation not only adds to the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian military in addressing criminal activities but also aims to restore a sense of security to local residents who often live in fear of such incidents.
