Katapola and the ancient city of Minoan (Amorgos) included in the 7 most endangered monuments
Katapola and the ancient city of Minoan in Amorgos have been listed among the 7 most endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe for 2026, according to Europa Nostra.
Europa Nostra, the foremost network of civil society for European cultural heritage, has announced its list of the 7 most endangered monuments and cultural heritage sites in Europe for 2026 as part of its 7 Most Endangered programme, supported by the European Investment Bank Institute (EIBI). The inclusion of Katapola and the ancient Minoan city of Amorgos highlights the urgent need for protective measures to preserve these significant historical sites.
Since its inception in 2013, the 7 Most Endangered Programme has evolved into a crucial initiative dedicated to saving at-risk European heritage. It serves as a catalyst for mobilizing expertise, combatting inappropriate development, and securing essential public and private support, including financial aid. Each listed site qualifies for a monetary award of €10,000 from the EIBI cultural heritage fund, further incentivizing action aimed at protecting these locations.
The recognition and support from Europa Nostra not only brings international attention to the cultural heritage of Amorgos but also emphasizes the vital role that these sites play in the region's identity and heritage. Protecting such landmarks is essential not only for historical preservation but also for the continued cultural and economic development of the area, particularly in light of tourism and local pride.
