Mr. Nobody Against Putin: Our Hands Were Shaking While Making This Film, Says Radovan Síbrt After Winning a BAFTA Award

Radovan Síbrt discusses the achievements and challenges of producing the documentary 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin,' which features a Russian teacher's efforts to expose state propaganda in Russia and has earned accolades including a BAFTA award and an Oscar nomination.

The documentary 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin,' which highlights the story of a Russian teacher who smuggled footage of indoctrinated children out of Russia, was released in Czech cinemas in November 2022. However, it began gaining international recognition a year earlier, winning the Special Jury Award for World Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2022 and the Audience Award at the MFDF Jihlava film festival in the autumn. Recently, the film was awarded a prestigious BAFTA for Best Documentary and has also received an Oscar nomination, with the Academy Awards scheduled for March 15.

Radovan Síbrt, the film's producer, expressed his emotional investment in the film during an interview, noting how their hands shook while making it due to the challenging circumstances surrounding the subject matter. He mentioned the pressing concerns related to the film's prominent figure, Pavel Talankin, especially regarding potential travel restrictions as they approach the Oscar ceremony. Síbrt pointed out the significant challenges faced by Talankin, who risks his life and freedom in exposing the realities of life in Russia under oppressive regimes.

The film intertwines personal narratives with larger political themes, showcasing the courage of individuals like Talankin amidst a backdrop of state-controlled media and propaganda. Síbrt's reflections also broach the emotional toll these events have on him personally, especially relating to his sister's situation, hinting at the human cost of their pursuit for truth and justice in a highly censored environment.
