Iran says good progress made in negotiations with the US, next round soon
Iranian officials report significant progress in nuclear negotiations with the US, facilitated by Oman, ahead of upcoming discussions.
Iran has announced that significant progress has been made in negotiations with the United States regarding its nuclear program. The talks, taking place with Omani mediation, come in light of US President Donald Trump's previous threats to strike Iran if an agreement is not reached. Trump had given Tehran a deadline of 15 days to come to an agreement, indicating the urgency and high stakes involved in these negotiations.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a televised interview that the discussions have advanced notably towards addressing various elements of the agreement, both in terms of nuclear capabilities and sanctions relief. While Iran initially demanded that discussions focus solely on its nuclear program, it is facing US demands to also limit its missile program and support for armed groups in the region. This complexity signifies the challenges and implications these negotiations have for regional stability and international relations.
The next round of negotiations is expected to occur possibly sooner than a week from now, with technical discussions set to commence in Vienna under the auspices of the United Nations nuclear oversight agency. Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, also confirmed that these technical discussions are scheduled to take place next week in Vienna, underscoring the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear ambitions and the broader geopolitical context of the Middle East.
