Tax Office seeks bankruptcy for nicotine pouch company - "it's a misunderstanding"
The Finnish Tax Administration has filed for bankruptcy against Snus Empire Finland, a company specializing in nicotine pouches; however, the CEO claims it is based on a misunderstanding.
The Finnish Tax Administration has initiated bankruptcy proceedings against Snus Empire Finland, which specializes in selling nicotine pouches and has retail outlets in Helsinki, Vantaa, and Tampere. The action has raised eyebrows, as the company's owner and CEO, Niko Karhu, argues that the bankruptcy filing is based on erroneous assumptions regarding tax liabilities related to their products. He insists that the products imported to Finland in 2023 were tax-exempt and have been sold without issue into early 2024.
Karhu elaborates that the misunderstanding stems from the Tax Administration's interpretation of his company’s products as subject to tobacco tax. He points out that the officials examined product specifications from foreign websites that featured differing packaging sizes and net weights compared to those registered in Finland. This discrepancy has contributed to the Tax Administration’s incorrect assessment and subsequent bankruptcy filing against Snus Empire.
Despite the filing, Karhu reassures that Snus Empire will continue its operations normally for the time being. He highlights that the bankruptcy application should not prompt immediate consequences for his company as they have provided a response addressing the Tax Administration's claims. The outcome of this legal matter could have significant implications not only for Snus Empire but also for the broader nicotine product market in Finland, especially as regulatory scrutiny intensifies rapport with taxation policies.
