Londrina Council Approves Veto to Tifanny, Trans Athlete, in Volleyball Tournament
The Londrina City Council has approved a request to prevent trans athlete Tifanny Abreu from participating in the upcoming Brazilian Cup finals.
The City Council of Londrina, Parana, passed an urgent request to disallow Tifanny Abreu, a trans woman competing for Osasco Voleibol Clube, from participating in the Brazilian Cup finals set to start on Friday, the 27th. The motion was presented by council member Jéssica Ramos Moreno and was voted on Thursday, receiving 12 votes in favor and 4 against. Moreno referenced a local law from 2024 which prohibits participation in sports by individuals whose gender identity contradicts their biological sex at birth.
In her proposal, Moreno emphasized the importance of adhering to this local law, which stipulates that any athlete identified in contravention with their biological sex is ineligible for participation in sports events within Londrina. The consequences for breaching this law could include immediate cancellation of permits for the event in question and a fine of R$ 10,000. This decision has raised concerns regarding the treatment of trans athletes and the implications of such policies in sports.
The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) expressed their awareness of the situation but have yet to release a formal statement concerning the impact of this decision on the tournament and Tifanny's rights and participation. This case highlights ongoing debates surrounding gender identity, sports, and inclusivity, as more sporting institutions grapple with the inclusion of transgender athletes in their competitions.
