Boss of theatre hosting Chinese dance group Shen Yun in Sydney won’t be intimidated by ‘outrageous’ threats
The head of the Sydney theatre hosting Shen Yun stated that they will not be deterred by anonymous threats and that audience interest has actually grown.
Graeme Kearns, the CEO of Foundation Theatres, affirmed that the company would not yield to recent bomb threats aimed at performances of the Shen Yun dance group in Sydney. Despite the alarming threats, which included evacuations of venues and threats against public figures, Kearns emphasizes that interest in the shows has notably increased, showing a strong public resolve against intimidation. Kearns assured the Guardian that Foundation Theatres had not received any direct threats themselves.
He mentioned the bomb threat that prompted an evacuation at the Gold Coast venue for Shen Yun performances, paralleling another serious threat that caused the evacuation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s residence. Kearns remarked on the unexpected publicity generated by these threats, hinting that it has inadvertently driven more ticket sales as people express solidarity or curiosity by attending the shows.
While Kearns did not disclose any plans to enhance security protocols at the Sydney Lyric Theatre for the performances scheduled in March, he did express confidence in the shows selling out, reflecting a resilient spirit among audiences. This situation raises important questions about public safety, freedom of artistic expression, and the reactions to external pressures concerning cultural events in Australia.
