US 'accelerates' after capturing 'Mencho': Offers 5 million dollars for leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel
The US has announced a reward of 5 million dollars for information leading to the capture of two drug lords linked to the Sinaloa Cartel following the presumed death of leader Nemesio Oseguera 'El Mencho'.
Following the presumed death of Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho', the US State Department has stepped up efforts against the Sinaloa Cartel by announcing rewards of up to five million dollars for information leading to the capture of two of its leaders. René Arzate García, alias 'La Rana', and his brother Alfonso Arzate García, known as 'Aquiles', are specifically targeted due to their significant roles in the Tijuana area of drug trafficking, which has been classified as a terrorist group by the Trump Administration.
The announcement made on February 26 indicates that both 'La Rana' and 'Aquiles' have been involved in drug trafficking activities since at least 2014 and have faced sanctions from the US Treasury in 2023. The drug enforcement agency (DEA) claims that the Arzate brothers have maintained control over the Tijuana region through violence and intimidation for the past 15 years, showcasing their influence over the lucrative drug trade that crosses the US-Mexico border.
This development comes amid heightened tensions related to drug trafficking and cartel activities in Mexico, prompting a stronger response from US authorities. The reward for the brothers illustrates the collaborative law enforcement efforts between the two countries aimed at dismantling powerful drug trafficking organizations that have long plagued both nations, raising important discussions regarding international cooperation and border security.
